Nature at its most spectacular

... of the Aosta Valley, can travel ... A link to the past … making us think about olden times as we travel along the three itineraries still in use from the Roman Age: Via delle Gallie, which used to run along the valley basin, from Pont Saint Martin to Aosta or its forks, one in the direction of the Alpis Graia (P. S. Bernardo pass), the other in the direction of the Alpi Pennine (G. S. Bernardo pass). Or, you could explore the famous Via Francigena, which is more than a road … an area of road, as defined by experts, and a real, ideal mosaic which in medieval times linked the sections of the Roman roads in an invisible carpet, a walkway permeated with spirituality, running from Rome to Canterbury, where each notch was on average a day's walk away from the next (30-40 km). It is interesting to note that Anselmo of Aosta, theologian and philosopher, famous for the demonstration defined by Kant as "ontological proof of the existence of God", was the Bishop of Canterbury from 1093. The journey taken by religion … the churches, the sanctuaries, the chapels and the crosses are not only found along the Roman and medieval road systems, but spread out, like a metaphor outlined by spirituality, along secondary roads and paths, explored by pilgrims and elected members of religion. In each of these cases, whether marginal or significant, the products of religious art testify to a past that is being revealed and ripe for discovery. The mark of art …sacred art, in Valle d’Aosta, without doubt bears significant weight, even if at times mixed with other sources of inspiration. It is difficult to give a clear, geometric shape to this journey, which lives on discontinuous creative motivations, to consult...take a closer look. The vagrant can choose from different forms of expression, all stored in an emotional memoir: biblical scenes mixed with fantasy figures on istoriato capitals in the Sant'Orso Cloister… Ottonian frescoes of St. Orso and the Cathedral of Aosta … wooden art sculptures in statues of saints in the parish museums … the splendour of goldsmith art in the St. Grato reliquary … the “lunettes” - half-arches, frescoed with scenes of everyday life, in Issogne Castle … as well as all the collections on display in the museums … The fortress “section" …the Valdostane castles confirm a particularly wealthy feudal history that offers a steady flow of picturesque history: medieval buildings were often built and raised on previous highland fortresses from Roman times; military bulwarks and noble residences, points of control along the compulsory passes (Bard Fortress and Fénis Castle are renowned), perimeters and facades with different styles, the weaponry of the visitable interiors, as well as the cultural interests, to impress you in a magical atmosphere, almost like “doors back in time” or … dimensional passages into your imagination.
